How To Turn Your House Balcony Into A Place Of Respite

RSS

If you're lucky enough to have a balcony in your home, there has never been a better time to make the most of it. With the ongoing stay-at-home orders and Circuit Breaker measures that Singapore has implemented, it's the perfect time to seize the opportunity to transform your balcony space.

Big or small, your outdoor area has so much versatility, and just sticking one or two chairs outside and calling it a day really doesn't cut it. Making the most of any outdoor space you have really helps to extend your apartment, giving you a bigger and fresher living environment.

When it comes to really getting the most out of your balcony and turning it into a place of relaxation, it can be confusing where to start. Thankfully, we've pulled together a how-to guide to teach you exactly how.

Flooring

The type of flooring on your balcony may not always be something you can make changes on your own without the help of professionals. Still, there are small DIY solutions you can simply implement to make some significant changes.

The first thing you can consider is whether you want your balcony to be step-free – on the same level as your living space.  By having your balcony on the same level as your living space, it can really create that cohesive feel and extend your boundaries into the balcony area.  On the other hand, if it’s your intention to create completely separate zones, you may prefer to have stepped access.

If you want to give your outdoor area that authentic outdoor feel, artificial grass can be a really fantastic addition. Pair with classic dark wood furniture and a neutral-coloured rug to provide a natural and airy look.

Go green

Despite the greenery view you might already be enjoying from your balcony, it would be nice to also add some nature right within your reach. Why not pick a few hardy plants to keep outside, requiring very little maintenance and upkeep? If you’re one of the more green-fingered ones, you can even opt for a small herb garden or even a fruit tree such as lime or lemon. If you’re lacking space, a vertical garden is a solid choice, saving valuable floor space.

Light it up

Lighting can have such a dramatic effect on any outdoor space. Enjoying a glass of wine by candlelight is a beautiful end to any day. If you’re looking for something a bit brighter, you could consider adding fairy lights wrapped around railings or intertwined in your outdoor greenery for a fairytale aesthetic.

Find the right furniture

Because of the size of most balconies, typical patio furniture tends to be too big or bulky. When you find the perfect piece, try placing it up against walls to really make the most of the space you're working with. Knowing how you want to spend time on your balcony will also influence your decision. If you wish to unwind with a nice glass of wine, bean bags may be a good choice. If you’re looking to dine outside regularly, you’ll want a sturdier set of outdoor tables and chairs.
