Mirrors, the luxury of the past.

Mirrors are essential to almost every urban household, it is a beautiful piece of accessory that is used throughout the world! But do you know when glass mirrors first came about it was considered a luxury that only the rich could afford at the time? And the introduction of the Venetians mirror made Venice the number one mirror manufacturer that no one could compete with for a while? Let us take a look at these luxury goods and how it has contributed to many of the royal estates in Europe.

The rise of Venice

Glass mirrors were already a thing in most parts of Europe though still something only the rich could afford. Especially mirrors with a bigger surface area as the process is made from small pieces of cut blown glass.
It was the pride and joy of the Venetian guildsman in the 15th century when they perfected the glass mirror with its unique ornate frames and meticulous process to create that everlasting sparkle. The Venetians mirrors were so beautiful and rare, it became the turning point of what a mirror is expected to be.

The council of 10

The secrets in creating these Venetians mirrors were so sought after, that the artisans on the island of Murano (the birthplace of Venetians mirrors) created a group called the “Council of 10” to closely safeguard its secrets and oversee the artisans well being to prevent its coveted secrets.
Paying the artist generous wages and accommodations, it is a bittersweet exchange for a lifetime of isolation on the island to make sure they won't break their solemn vow of confidentiality.
The popularity of these mirrors became is overwhelming, it became a hobby for the rich and high social classes in Europe to collect these masterpieces. As each piece is meticulously crafted, a Venetian mirror can cost as much as a naval ship!

These mirrors and Venice lace made them one of the leading exporters in Europe which lasted well over a century.

The secret is out

After close to 150 years of secrecy, in the 17th century, a minister manage to bribe a few Maruno masters to come over to France. Pretty quickly, the French honed the Venetians glassblowing technique and begin exploring and incorporating new ways to produce these mirrors such as using casting techniques. Immediately once this manufacturing process was developed, construction on the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versaille was commenced and it became one of the most iconic parts of the palace.

(Check out our previous blog post!)

This made France a direct competitor to Venice in the mirror manufacturing area. And with having their own line of mirror production, France does not have to pay 100,000 crowns (that is a lot!) yearly to Italy for mirror imports.

The Venetian mirror legacy

We guess one thing you can surely take from this little trip to the past is how the Venetians mirror brought about a new perspective for how we view thing. It is not only a functional piece of furniture but an artwork by itself. From palace to home, mirrors now play a huge role in bringing the illusion of space and light into the room while being glamorous and adorn as a statement piece.

A great journey from being a humble piece of vanity, to a show-stopping centerpiece. Mirrors are often underappreciated in today's society but let us all now “reflect” (Get it :) ?) on its history and respect its past supremacy as one of the most sought-after luxury goods.

Time to look at some beautifully designed mirrors with a fresher perspective!

Inspiration! The Palace of Versailles

Out of Paris bustling streets stands the seat of power of old France. The palace of Versailles. Where the Kings and Queens has taken the throne and ruled over its subjects and where the nation's governments and court were held at the beginning of 1682. It is a place of great history and art, where court intrigue and status was valued with the highest respect. Where monarchy is at its peak in France,

The interior of the Palace was inspired by many cultural influences that is reinterpreted into the French style that you know and love today! A total of 50 years and thousands of workers hard work was invested to give the palace its grandeur

After the French Revolution, Versailles never took back its place as the seat of power. It was an empty shell till 1837 when it was reopened as The Museum of the History of France by King Louis -Philippe as the gathering point for all thing contributing to the “glory of France”

So let us take a peek into the halls of this great symbol of France and see what we can learn from this UNESCO’s site about its interior and style!

Hall of Mirrors

The Hall of Mirrors is one of the many spectacles in the palace. As the principal part of one of the buildings, the central gallery leads to the private apartment of the King and was used daily when King Louis XIV made his way to the chapel.

During that time, Mirrors are considered on the most expensive items to possess at the time.

With France economy thriving at the time, it was displayed by the number and size of the 357 mirrors on the 17 marbled arches, rivaling even the Venetians and their monopoly in mirror manufacturing.

The design also showcase the french prowess in the arts with its red reef limestone pillars (Rouge de Rance pilasters) that were adorned in bronze with symbols of the french royals, popularly known as “The French Style”.

The Baroque style architecture

At the height of the Italian Renaissance, the Baroque style architecture was popular for its focus on extravagance and art, encouraging artists to explore their creativity and usage of the elements for decorative purpose. However, despite it being heavily influenced by the Baroque style, the interior has that symmetry that seems to create that optical illusion, a little French twist you would say!

The State Apartments of the Roman Gods.

King Louis XIV created a series of apartments to give him a certain amount of privacy. Each room was named after a Roman god associated with the known planets at the time. It was not long till it was reused to for social gatherings and drawing rooms. There is was an event every night called “Apartment evenings” for the members of the court.

Rooms were decorated intricately with statues of King Louis XIV and rare paintings. But with different king reigning, there will be a different style. Thou still deck in splendor such as marble, the design of furniture changes to suit the kings liking.

Furniture of Kings

Each king wants to express his reign in the palace. With that, each King has his own style and aesthetics that he wants to portray to members of the court in Versailles. Redoing the furniture was a way of showcasing his rule. Maybe the most iconic of all is the King Louis Chairs, a statement of French furniture even now.

King Louis XIV for example, when he created the palace, he wanted to something to reflect his divine right to rule. So his furniture is often grand and throne-like that is fully ornate. While King Louis XVI has a more neoclassical look with clean lines and geometric traits, often with a rounded back.

So hope you like that little trip around the royal palace and be sure to pop by Finn Avenue right here in Singapore to have a little french luxe for your home.

Behind The Design: The King Louis XVI Collection

Like taking a step into the halls of Versailles, the Nolie & Finn Collection of King Louis XVI chairs are like little capsules of history that exude character and fitness. Come with us on the journey on how we had to idea to bring in our own representation of these timeless pieces.

When did it begin?

A replication, inspired by the design of the last king of France. We wanted to create the Nolie and Finn collection to lets you take a little piece of the French Aristocrats lifestyle back into your own home! Acknowledging the craft that went in during that period, these exquisite pieces are fully hand carved with the finest material that we can procure.

Much Different from its predecessors, King Louis XVi wanted something different that has his individuality, with a more geometric angular cut, his chairs have straight fluted legs that projects a more neoclassical feel rather than the heavily influenced baroque style that his father preferred.

While knowing that it has a timeless feel, we wanted a slightly modern approach to the chairs with its color and back design while still emulating that luxurious high French lifestyle.

What makes it so unique?

The Frame

All hand carved from prestigious solid French beech wood and with a black antique finish.

Its Intricate design from the top all the way down to its fluted legs shows the quality and hard work that was done to create such a masterpiece.

The seat

Upholstered with fine Italian cowhide leather, its seats are comfy and durable. And accompanied with a traditional copper-gold nail trimming that is hand applied meticulously.

The Backing

Fairy Place and Wandering Voice

Both of these exquisite pieces are fashioned with a jacquard woven fabric imported from Spain. And a stunning work of art is embroidered to create this masterpiece featuring two birds resting on a tree branch.

Black Stripes, Black Knight

A unique fur on leather experience like no other, its natural hind quality makes it so that no one piece is the same! It is more so evident on the Black Stripes Armchair with its artistic stenciling to create that interesting design.

These timeless classics would stand the test of time with its durable structure and material. So come on over to our showroom to view the historic collection.
